Understanding the SEMA RAG Classification System
The Storage Equipment Manufacturers’ Association (SEMA) uses a traffic light RAG (Red, Amber, Green) classification system to assess the severity of damage to warehouse racking. This industry-recognised system helps businesses determine the level of risk, the urgency of repairs, and the appropriate action required to maintain a safe and compliant warehouse environment.
Green Risk – Monitor
Green-rated damage falls within SEMA’s acceptable tolerance limits and does not require immediate repair. However, the affected components should be recorded and regularly monitored as part of your routine warehouse racking inspection programme to ensure the damage does not worsen over time.
Amber Risk – Repairs Required
Amber-rated damage exceeds SEMA’s recommended limits and requires corrective action. While the racking may remain in use temporarily, the affected bays must not be reloaded once they have been unloaded. Repairs should be completed within four weeks, otherwise the damage is automatically reclassified as Red Risk.
Red Risk – Immediate Action Required
Red-rated damage indicates a serious structural risk and requires immediate attention. The affected racking must be unloaded without delay, isolated from use, and clearly identified to prevent further loading. The racking should remain out of service until like-for-like repairs or replacement components have been installed by competent, qualified professionals, restoring the system to its original design specification.
Damaged racking should be assessed as soon as possible. If a formal inspection identifies Red Risk damage, affected bays should be unloaded immediately until repairs have been completed.
