Principal Contractor for Acorn Bioenergy’s New Biomethane Facility
Project Overview
NSI Project’s role as Principal Contractor covered the full spectrum of CDM responsibilities during the 20 weeks of the project. This included planning and managing construction activities, ensuring health and safety compliance, and maintaining clear communication across all stakeholders. The challenge was to deliver the final phase of the project efficiently while maintaining a safe working environment and meeting all operational and regulatory standards.

The team took full control of health and safety on site, acting as the central point of contact for all contractors and visitors. Comprehensive safety inductions were carried out, with strict enforcement of CDM 2015 regulations throughout the final construction and commissioning phase.
A full-time Site Manager and Senior Project Manager oversaw daily activity, managing sequencing, contractor performance, and compliance. NSI maintained authority to stop any unsafe works, ensuring consistent control and accountability.
All essential site documentation, including the Construction Phase Plan, Traffic Management and Fire Plans, and contractor RAMS, were regularly reviewed and updated. Weekly and monthly reports kept Acorn fully informed, while close coordination with designers, suppliers, and the client ensured smooth progress on a tight programme.
Result
NSI Project’s structured, hands-on approach has ensured a safe working environment, full regulatory compliance, and consistent progress toward the facility’s operational readiness.
Once fully operational, the biomethane plant is expected to produce enough green gas to heat over 9,380 homes annually, contributing significantly to the UK’s renewable energy targets. In addition, the facility will support around 50 engineering jobs, boosting local employment and industry expertise.
