Narrow aisle racking and very narrow aisle racking (VNA) can offer some of the same flexibility as wide aisle racking, but by reducing aisle width and storing pallets to a greater height, storage density is increased. It still allows access to individual pallets, whilst retaining full system adjustability.
Narrow aisle racking is a great way to maximise the use space available and the height goods can be stacked, by allowing fork lifts to use aisles half the width required in conventional pallet racking.
Narrow aisle racking does require a specialist fork-truck, but due to the densities achieved, it can be a cost effective investment, offset by the added value of better access and use of space. Specialist VNA trucks, often with a man-up feature can be guided in runs either by wires embedded in the floor or guidance rails at ground level.
Aisles can be down to 1.8 metres. This enables them to achieve good speed in aisle, but they are designed to operate primarily in aisle. The man-up function can enhance the speed and nature of high level picking, including individual case picks. Bendi or Flexi-trucks can also be used in narrow aisle configurations, with aisles down as low as 1.9 metres, however these are not guided, thus are slower and have less height capability. They do offer flexibility as a yard truck as well as an in-rack truck.
